UTS College handed the camera to students: real archives became the campaign

The Year That Made Me uses students’ own video, photographs and words. The education brand sells a year of transformation rather than an abstract qualification.

UTS College has launched The Year That Made Me, built from real video, photographs and words supplied by students. Rather than hiring actors to recreate “typical student life,” The Core Agency used material already held on the participants’ phones: friendships, late study, setbacks, small victories and moments when belonging appeared.

What the education brand is selling

UTS College provides a pathway toward the University of Technology Sydney, but the campaign does not reduce its value to an admissions diagram. Its claim is that the year builds confidence, independence, friendships and resilience. Terez, Jacob, Isha, Rishi and Susie describe different starting barriers, including uncertainty after school, a later return to study and the need to understand university life.

The work runs across paid social, digital video, owned assets and student touchpoints. The Core Agency developed the positioning and campaign.

  • Five student stories anchor the site.
  • Real images, video and words provide the raw material.
  • Paid and owned channels carry different parts of the story.

Authenticity still needs editing and consent

Phone origin alone does not guarantee truth. Selection can smooth several lives into one advertising template, so editors must preserve the participant’s voice and context. Students also need to understand where their private material will appear, how paid media expands its audience, how long rights last and whether consent can be withdrawn.

Evidence instead of a promise

Education advertising promises future transformation that is hard to verify before purchase. Archive material supplies smaller pieces of evidence: a first presentation, a group project, a friendship or a move from fear to student leadership. Emotional proof should still sit beside precise information about entry criteria, duration, fees and progression.

UA Banner has analysed how serial content creates a longer-lived asset. Here, different student stories let prospective applicants find a barrier that resembles their own rather than a generic testimonial.

UA Banner conclusion

The campaign is persuasive when students remain people instead of testimonial formats. Archive content shortens the distance between advertising and experience, but it requires informed consent, honest editing and practical course detail. The strongest outcome is not “this looks authentic,” but “this answers the fear I actually have.”
